Book Review: Super Freakonomics

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

In spite of the overly witty full title – Super Freakonomics Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance – the book is actually a fascinating tale of how economics plays into even the most bizarre areas of modern life.

We are desensitized thanks to sound bites and casualty statistics that have become mundane. We are jaded thanks to pundits with their own agendas. We are operating in an everyday reality that makes it impossible for us to understand what happened to the people in this story…until we read this book.

Book Review: The Element – How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

The first time I heard the phrase “in your element”, I was about 20 years old and visiting a history museum with my mom. At one point during our visit she turned to me and said, “You’re really in your element here.” At the time I just smiled and thought, “I wonder what she means by that?” Years later I am reading The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson and remembering that day – finally getting what my mom was trying to say to me. Pity I didn’t get it – and she didn’t elaborate then!

Book Review: Outliers The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

Why do some people succeed in life while others struggle? Is it a difference in intelligence? Genetics? Environment? Opportunity? Or just plain luck?

Book Review: The Tyranny of Old Ideas by Matt Miller

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Don’t read The Tyranny of Dead Ideas: Letting Go of the Old Ways of Thinking to Unleash a New Prosperity if you’re seriously entrenched or otherwise fully invested in the “way things work”. You won’t like what Matt Miller has to say. It’s revolutionary.

Book Review: Sway – The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Sway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior is a fascinating book. I’ll bet the title alone will hit a lot of people personally as it did me. The other thing that hit me as I read Sway is the notion that I am not alone in my sometimes irrational thinking! I mean, what a relief to discover that!

Book Review – Earth: The Sequel

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Earth: The Sequel by Fred Krupp and Miriam Horn, is a book about the future – the future of the earth, the future of civilization, and the future of energy. It is a refreshingly hopeful look at global warming, the message being that we CAN change the way we live, we have the knowledge, we are perfecting the technology, and we still have time to turn around the damage we’ve already caused the environment through unbridled abuse of fossil fuels.
