The Story Factor (2nd Revised Edition) is recommended reading for anyone seeking to increase their power of influence in any situation. This book offers examples and instruction of how good storytellers develop and how we all have the potential to become one.
People are amazing – I think most of us forget that most of the time. The way we think, the way we act – why we think and act the way we do…these things are mostly thought of as unpredictable. Yet, we can be and often are influenced. Storytelling is a tool of influence. If you can tell a good story, you may just rule the world.
In The Story Factor (2nd Revised Edition): Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion Through The Art of Storytelling, Annette Simmons offers advice and examples of how to be an effective storyteller – and how that can enhance our powers of influence and inspire us in every facet of our lives.
One of the most important stories to get straight first is the story of ourselves: Who we are and why are we here. If you want to start telling stories that influence, you have to get your own story in line – and not just repeat your story, but live it.
The Story Factor (2nd Revised Edition) is full of truths – human truths. One of the most powerful of these truths that Annette Simmons give us is that everything is personal.
“We have been told for years that if we are ‘emotional’ then we can’t make good decisions. We have been told that ‘business is business, it isn’t personal.’ This is a bunch of hogwash. Business is personal. We care deeply about our jobs, about our performance, and about our coworkers.”
Thank you Ms. Simmons. Why this fact is so hard for most of us to admit is a mystery. We are human, after all. Only machines can tune all personal feelings out of a work or business experience. Everything is personal.
This is what makes storytelling so effective – and what makes it so vital. Throughout history good storytellers have captured the hearts, minds and imaginations of masses. One example from of this is Adolf Hitler – a good example, as it shows that good storytellers are capable of inspiring not only good, but evil. Another excellent example is Jesus Christ. Christ spoke to believers and non-believers in parables (stories) to ensure his words would be understood – regardless of the background of the people listening. Through storytelling Jesus changed the world. Imagine what mountains you could move if you were a good storyteller…
So how do you become a good storytelling? First step is read The Story Factor. Following that, dig deep. Think of things that have happened in your life that have changed you, the way you think and the way you act. Turn these events into stories. Practice telling these stories to the people around you. Ask the listeners to tell you how they feel about your stories, how you can improve them, make them more interesting. Don’t forget to include feelings, lots of feelings.
Remember: Everything is personal, the more personal your stories, the more influential you will be.
