Tear Down the Walls and Write from Your HeartTear Down the Walls and Write from Your Heart

Many people struggle with writing, and I say, there’s no reason for it. Anyone can write well. The key is to stop trying so hard to write perfectly, there is no perfect. The “rules” of writing are really just guidelines. Yes, there are grammar and punctuation to consider, but you shouldn’t let them get in the way of you expressing your ideas.

What you say, not how you say it

That’s how it starts. The first step to writing better is just to write. Let the words flow from your heart and tell the story you are trying to tell. Once you have it all down on paper, then you can go back and put all the commas and periods in, check for hanging participles and sentence fragments, and whatever else you need to check for.

Getting hung up on the rules squashes creativity. A good way to exercise your creativity – yes you are creative, everyone is creative – is to do some free writing. Pick a topic and just write 2-3 paragraphs. Don’t worry about periods and commas, just let your thoughts, ideas and arguments flow. Do this a few times a week and before long you’ll find that writing well is not so hard!

Like any other skill, writing does take practice. But the practice of writing is so much more than knowing the rules, it is an opening of your heart and mind. That may be difficult for some, but writing itself should be easy.
