I’m Guilty! Of Poor Blogging Practices…

February 26th, 2009 · No Comments · Blogging, Social Marketing, Success in Business, copywriting, web 2.0

In this season of Lent, I thought I’d come clean and just admit my guilt: I don’t post to my business blog nearly enough.

Poor posting frequency is a major blogging sin. But I vow to repent! It’s not that there is nothing to say about Web 2.0, new media marketing, customer service, PR, word of mouth, social marketing and other hot marketing topics…heck, Twitter alone could keep be busy blogging for the next month! For me, it’s a time issue, poorly allocated time. Hey, this is a time for sheer honesty so I can admit I don’t always use my time wisely.

Ironically, I counsel my clients that they must post to their blogs and post frequently! It’s the only way to ensure that your blog matters to your clients and customers, readers and yes, to search engines as well. I know this, so instead of giving something up for Lent, I’m making a promise to post to this blog, two times per week or more, with relevant, useful, keyword-rich articles and information.

And my other promise is to not only read other marketing blogs, which I actually do on a daily basis, but leave thoughtful comments that add to the value of the conversation taking place.

Does your business blog need a kick in the pants like mine?

Ok, so make the vow with me – today we will:

  • Create a blogging editorial schedule. Just like a newspaper or magazine, a blog should live by the editorial schedule.
  • Make a list of blog topics. Great sources include industry magazines, newspapers, television, and other blogs.
  • Enlist help from others. Great bloggers often emerge from the depths of a company. Who in your business is an expert at their job? Who is a talented communicator? A great way to find bloggers from within is to have a little contest. Ask each staff member to write a couple of paragraphs about what they are working on and how it could help your clients or potential clients. Give a prize to the best entries from each department – maybe a free lunch, which will exist for this purpose – and of course a regular spot on the blogging schedule.
  • Subscribe to related blogs. Go ahead, even sign up for your competitor’s blog updates. What better way to keep up with the competition. Be sure to take part in the discussion by leaving useful, thoughtful comments on other blogs. This is a good way to be seen as a contributing member of the blog community, and also gets your name and business out there.

Don’t wait another day to post to your blog or get a schedule rolling. The only way to climb to the top of the blog heap (a heap that consists of 130 million blogs and counting according to Technorati), is to post, post, post!
