It’s true, podcasts are everywhere. Even if you think you don’t know what a podcast is, I’ll bet that you’ve seen and/or heard a few.

To continue singing the praises of podcasting…podcasts and their kissing cousins, videocasts, are a fantastic and fun way to get exposure for your business, product, service and for yourself.

I’ve spoken many times before about how to become known as an expert in your field by writing articles, whitepapers, e-books and blogs. Podcasts are an even more powerful way to become recognized as the “go to” person in your particular field. And that, my friends, is the key to getting more and better clients.

What exactly is a podcast?

Podcasts, v-casts, and video casts are all short electronic messages that you produce and then upload to the Internet. Once available on line, your clients, customers and prospects can find them – either on your Web site or on a shared media Web site (like YouTube). Distributing your podcast to multiple outlets is called “viral” marketing – like a virus, it spreads from one person to the next. You plant the seed and the wind does the rest, get it?

If you think that perhaps your clients, customers and prospects don’t watch or download podcasts, according to Arbitron/Edison Media Research approximately 30% of regular Internet users have downloaded a podcast and 49% of podcast consumers watch or listen to podcasts on their computers (source: Arbitron/Edison Media Research, The Podcast Consumer Revealed, April 2008).

What is the difference between podcasting and blogging?

Podcasts take blogs to the next level. Podcasts don’t replace blogs, but they make blogs more compelling. Just as the blog is your thoughts in writing, a podcast is your voice and your face explaining your thoughts. It creates a more personal experience for viewers and listeners.

Eye contact, body language, tone of voice – all of these personal attributes convey messages of their own. So, when producing your podcast, you have to think about all of these things, not just the words you are saying, but how are you saying it? What do you sound like? Do you seem trustworthy, friendly, knowledgeable.

Podcasting IS easy, but it’s not simple. If you would like more information about podcasting such as how to create a compelling script, how to deliver your message powerfully yet humanly, and where to post your podcasts, please click here to contact me.
